Spurring Endogenous Growth in Less Developed Countries with Grid Computing

By: Ahmar Abbas
I'll be giving a talk at the 20th Annual Conference of the Association of Pakistani Scientists and Engineers of North America on August 23, 2003, which looks at the impact of new technologies, specifically grid computing on growth potential of less developed countries.

The tremendous push over the last decade in the developed countries to move scientific research from in vivo to in silico is a boon for developing countries. Whether is it conducting experiments in particle physics or in bio technology, all a scientist in a less developed country needs is a sharp mind and computational resources. The development of technologies such as grid computing allows less developed countries to assemble supercomputers with commodity components - allowing them to conduct big science. Assembling fifty PCs on a grid will give scientists and engineers gigaflops of computing capacity - suitable to attack most complex scientific problems.

This talk will briefly discuss the economic principles of endogenous and exogenous growth, delve into new technologies that will spur endogenous growth. It is my assertion that highly commoditized businesses such as offshore outsourcing, call centers etc. may be highly lucrative short term initiatives but essentially represent a "race to the bottom" - in other words constantly declining margins. The long term success of less developed countries depend on how much knowledge it creates.

I'll adapt the full talk for a blog post early next week.

Just delivered 600+ manuscript pages of Grid Computing: A Practical Guide to Technology and Applications to the publisher. Tons of hard work by lots of people made this possible. Will update the blog with more information on the book, the accompanying CD-ROM and the contributors as we get close to the November release date. In the meanwhile however, you can pre-order the book from Amazon or Barnes and Noble. Amazon Japan is carrying it also.

Off to Super Nova

By: Ahmar Abbas
Postings on the GRIDBLOG will be light the next day or two - first because I am traveling down to Washington DC for SuperNova - Jeff Pulver and Kevin Werbach's conference that explores the decentralization of communications, software, and media. As always there is a party - This time Joi Ito has organized an open pre-conference party at Casablanca - where there will be lots of this going on ...

Second, I want to give these guys a chance to work on the the new and improved GRIDBLOG - that is set to launch shortly. We even have a logo! Check it out!Read Full Article...
