Technology UpdatesDecember 24, 2009Beyond Cloud 101: The Next Steps of Cloud Innovation - By Ahmar AbbasBy: Ahmar AbbasMore small and medium sized businesses are turning to cloud computing to handle a broader range of IT processes previously managed in house. For organizations now considering cloud computing, the technological terminology can be a bit confusing if not daunting. This brief review of different cloud computing options and trends will help IT decision-makers at small and medium sized companies make th right choice for their enterprises. The key accomplishment for 2009 is that we finally were able to get a workable taxonomy for cloud computing. December 01, 2003GFPS Based GridsBy: Ahmar AbbasA large-scale Grid environment built using GPFS was named Best Commercial Application in the Fourth Annual High Performance Bandwidth Challenge at last week's Supercomputing Conference 2003.GPFS is a high-performance shared-disk file system that provides data access from all nodes in a Linux or UNIX cluster environment. Parallel and serial applications can readily access shared files using standard UNIX file system interfaces, and the same file can be accessed concurrently from multiple nodes. GPFS provides high availability through logging and replication, and can be configured for failover from both disk and server malfunctions. GPFS is currently deployed in clusters for applications like weather simulations, engineering design, seismic analysis, digital content creation and distribution, and financial modeling. Apparently, @stake didn't want to risk getting into trouble with Microsoft - so they Dixie Chixed him last week. Given his credentials and experience as a security expert, I doubt Dan will have a problem finding gainful employment - I wish him luck. His work however, is still available for all of us to study. He argues Read Full Article... In fact, today's enormous communications technology is really primitive compared to the more intricate and complex biological systems of human beings. I recorded a webcast for IT World that discusses how the results and knowledge acquired from studying complex systems influences the design and management of information technology - both of hardware and software systems. Please check out the webcast here and let me know what you think! The webcast presentation is 8 minutes long. The cluster is set to launch in March of next year and will clock in at 10 Tflops - which means it'll probably end up as #1 on the Top 500 Cluster List. This article in Businessweek points out that: " For China, the race to make powerful computers is a matter of national pride; the country ranks the activity, along with space exploration and genetic research, as key indicators of national progress. " It was just a few days ago that the US Congress was worried about Japan taking the lead in supercomputing - now it must also put China on its radar. Is competing for the fastest peak performance supercomputer and cluster going to be the next Space Race ?
