I also ran the BOF at NGN 2002 and thought it was pretty successful. Despite being scheduled at the same time as the conference reception, the BOF attracted over 30 people from 10 different countries. Still a ways away isn't it? Not really. Starting October 1, 2003 all DoD networking purchases will consider evolution to IPv6 as a key decision criteria. Since the government is one of the key technology spender these days, I expect that vendors will not hesitate to jump on the IPv6 bandwagon now. And with the proliferation of no PC devices IP devices (cameras, sensors, PDA, cell phones etc) the timing is probably right.Many of the research networks involved in grid computing are already using IPv6 - Ian Foster is even keynoting the upcoming North American IPv6 conference. The first one talks about NTT technology that makes transmission speeds 10 times faster than today. (Is that OC-768 x 10 = 400 Gbps???). The second story talks about introducing an updated TCP protocol called Fast TCP to improve throughput on existing links. The Fast TCP protocol is interesting since it leverages most of the existing Internet infrastructure.
